In consistency lies the power, one of the things we realize about life is that many people know what to do to excel and many people know what to do to succeed but not many people are consistent with it. The wrong things are easy to to do but the right things are hard to do. The human nature will consistently lead you to do those things that are not good for you, for you to be able to do the things there are good for you need discipline and consistency. You cannot become a spiritually matured Christian if you are not disciplined and consistent in the things of the Spirit.

I’d rather somebody pray 15 minutes consistently daily for 30 years than pray 10 hours and don’t pray again.

Fasting does not change God, fasting does not give you more power, fasting disciplines your flesh, fasting humbles your soul so you can minister to the Lord effectively. You may say but the people of Niniveh fasted and God changed his mind, no they repented and were forgiven because of their repentance. Fasting is an important spiritual discipline and we must develop it.

Biblical examples of fasting:

1. Jesus fasted when he was to start ministry (Luke 4:2)

2. Nehemiah fasted when he was rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem (Nehemiah 1:4)

3. David fasted and humbled himself before God (Psalm 35:13) and he fasted for healing and miraculous intervention (2 Samuel 12:17&23)

4. Esther, Modercai and the Jews fasted  for God’s intervention (Esther 4:3)

5. The early Church fasted and ministered unto the lord (Acts 13:2, Acts 14:23)

6. Jesus expected his disciples to fast (Matthew 6:16)

Wrong Motivations for fasting:

1. To be seen by others (Matthew 6:18): people can know that you’re fasting but you don’t have to let them know. You don’t have to announce your fasting program.

2. You don’t have to fast to be justified by God (Luke 18:12-14)

3. We don’t need to use our fasting as works before the lord (Luke 18:12-14)

4. We don’t fast to be commended by God (1 Corinthians 8:8)

When we fast we separate ourselves from something to give ourselves to something. Fasting is not about staying from food but it’s about staying from food so you can minister to God. Fasting is about ministering to God (Acts 13:1-3). Fasting is to discipline and subdue your body, to be temperate in all things, fasting helps you to discipline your body so you can minister to God effectively, fasting helps to discipline your urge for food because gluttony and excessive eating is sin. One of the purposes people fasted in the Bible was to seek the face of God, they fasted to spend time with the lord. Fasting should be able to drive an internal change in you not just a religious thing, fasting should be able to change your perspective.

Why should you fast?

1. Fasting restores your health

2. It helps you to discipline the craving of the flesh and maintain self control

3. It helps you to control your eating habit

Wesley Duewel, a twentieth-century writer, said, “You and I have no more right to omit fasting because we feel no special emotional prompting than we have a right to omit prayer, Bible reading, or assembling with God’s children for lack of some special emotional prompting”

Endeavour to schedule a day to fast, choose a period to fast, choose the purpose of your fast, deliberately fast an addiction, if you are addicted to Facebook fast it, fast by seeking God and sowing generously.
