What about the Villages?

Matthew 9:35 ¶ And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people.

Jesus is our perfect role model in the spread of the Gospel. When He came to this earth, he stated very clearly what His mandate and mission was. It was to seek and save the lost and when He was ascending to heaven, He left us with the same mandate and commission to preach and teach the Gospel.

In the above verse of scripture, we see the journey of Jesus to preach the Gospel. One thing I want you to note that was very obvious was that Jesus went to both cities and most importantly observe that He also went to villages.

As far as there are human beings existing in any geographical location we should have the same burning desire to reach them and minister the message of the Kingdom to them.

The villages are not very attractive, because the lack modern basic infrastructures. Financially they may not be very encouraging because the rural dwellers are mainly peasant subsistent farmers producing just barely enough for their ever growing families, they are sometimes overwhelmed by their lack that they lack the basic culture of giving.

The place may even be too“local” for you, that you might not be so proud of posting the location on twitter or instagram while others are posting pictures of ShopRite, London, Abuja and big shopping malls. The village market with hurricane lamps may seem abnormal.

Does this means, that this precious people dwelling in rural areas would be denied the Gospel?

Have you ever asked yourself? What about the Villages?

“The sad reality is that there are many Christians who are “saved”, “heaven bound,” and “hell proofed” who do not care about the souls of the lost. What a beautiful contrast our Lord Jesus Christ is! His passion for souls brought Him from Heaven to earth, His Passion for souls motivated His compassionate activity. His passion for souls pressed Him to a rough cross where He surrendered His life to save the lost.”

― John Willis Zumwalt

Sometimes even “Christian’ ladies are not comfortable with marrying missionaries who are in the village, the most common question is “ when will you be posted out of this bush?”, how long will you serve before you start your own in a good city where we can find good schools and at least enjoy life.

I want you to see these verses of scriptures. Jesus did not have occasional visits to the villages but He made it part of his custom, routine travel plans.

He did not just visit His favourite village, He went to several of them to preach, teach and heal.

Mr 6:6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the villages, teaching.

Mr 6:56 And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. {touched him: or, touched it}

Lu 9:56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

Lu 13:22And he went through the cities and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem.

“I believe that in each generation God has called enough men and women to evangelize all the yet unreached tribes of the earth. It is not God who does not call. It is man who will not respond!”

Acts 8:25 And they, when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, returned to Jerusalem, and preached the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans. (KJV).

The Apostles followed in the steps of their master. They also preached in MANY VILLAGES of the Samaritans.

The questions I am asking you today is , what about the villages ?

  1. Adopt a village where a missionary is serving and pray for them
  2. Adopt a missionary in the village and support them
  3. Plan a field visit to the brethren in the villages and share fellowship with them
  4. Prayerfully send financial supports to village churches they would need it to get a proper place of worship, and hold several life changing meetings, etc
  5. Support a church plant in a rural area

May God raise up more men from amongst us that would also travel to the villages and share the Gospel of His love.
